System Operation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 GMC Safari and 2003 Chevrolet Astro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Parking brake apply input force is received by the parking brake pedal assembly being depressed, transferred and evenly distributed, through the parking brake cables and parking brake cable equalizer, to the left and right parking brake apply levers. The parking brake apply levers multiply and transfer the apply input force to the actuators which expand the parking brake shoe toward the friction surface of the drum-in-hat portion of the rear brake rotor in order to prevent rotation of rear wheels. The parking brake release handle assembly releases an applied parking brake system when it is pulled reward.
