Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Montana, 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette, and 2002 Chevrolet Venture. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Head restraints are the double-post type that are adjustable up or down. Only the solid-type head restraints have serviceable trim covers.

Removal of the head restraints can be accomplished by using the J 42372  or by fabricating a similar tool. The rear seat head restraint has only 1 locking post. Only one special tool or fabricated tool is necessary for the removal of the head restraint.

  1. Raise the head restraint to a full up position.
  2. Push the head restraint down just far enough in order to center the locking clip (4) in the guide between the detents on the posts (3).
  3. Insert the J 42372  down the detent side of the post (3).
  4. Hold the tool down, and at the same time, lift the head restraint upward in order to disengage the detent (3) from the guide (4).
  5. Lift the restraint out.
