Disabling the SIR System

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Montana, 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette, and 2002 Chevrolet Venture. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Important:  Refer to SIR Service Precautions .

  1. Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicle's wheels are pointing straight ahead.
  2. Turn OFF the ignition.
  3. Remove the key from the ignition switch.
  4. Remove the fuse block access cover.

    Important:  With the SDM Fuse removed and the ignition ON, the AIR BAG indicator illuminates. This is normal operation and does not indicate an SIR system malfunction.

  5. Remove the SDM Fuse.
  6. Remove the LH insulator panel.
  7. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) (3) from the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil connector (2) located at the base of the steering column.
  8. Disconnect the steering wheel module coil connector (2).
  9. Remove the RH insulator panel.

  10. Remove the CPA (2) from the inflatable restraint IP module connector (1) located behind the RH insulator panel.
  11. Disconnect the IP module connector (1).

  12. Remove the CPA from the inflatable restraint side impact module - LF connector (4) located under the driver seat.
  13. Disconnect the side impact module - LF connector (4).
  14. Remove the CPA from the seat belt pretensioner - LF connector (3) located under the driver seat.
  15. Disconnect the seat belt pretensioner - LF connector (3).
  16. Remove the CPA from the inflatable restraint side impact module - RF connector (4) located under the front passenger seat.
  17. Disconnect the side impact module - RF connector (4).
  18. Remove the CPA from the seat belt pretensioner - RF connector (3) located under the front passenger seat.
  19. Disconnect the seat belt pretensioner - RF connector (3).
