Removal & Installation (Except 8.1L)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Savana Special, 2002 GMC Savana Camper Special, 2002 GMC Savana, 2002 Chevrolet RV Cutaway, and 2002 Chevrolet Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

NOTE: Do not use the old cap, CMP sensor, and rotor screws. Use the replacement screws that have been coated with a thread locking compound.

On engines equipped with distributor, Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor is located within distributor. See Fig 1. Remove the engine cover. See ENGINE COVER . Disconnect the spark plug wires and ignition coil wire from the distributor. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor harness connector from the distributor. Remove the distributor cap. Remove the rotor. Align the square slot in the reluctor wheel with the CMP sensor. See Fig 2. Remove the CMP screws. Remove the CMP sensor. See Fig 3. To install, insert the CMP sensor through the reluctor wheel slot. Install NEW cap, CMP sensor, and rotor screws. Install the rotor onto the reluctor wheel. Install the distributor cap. Connect the CMP sensor harness connector. Connect the spark plug wires and ignition coil wire. Install the engine cover.
