Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Montana, 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette, and 2002 Chevrolet Venture. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
IMPORTANT: Support the wheel drive shaft until it is completely installed.
  1. Position the wheel drive shaft to the differential output shaft.
    IMPORTANT: Do not damage the differential output shaft oil seal.
  2. Carefully align and guide the wheel drive shaft onto the differential output shaft.
  3. Install the wheel drive shaft fully onto the differential output shaft using light force.
  4. Verify that the wheel drive shaft is fully seated on the differential output shaft retaining ring by grasping the inner tripot housing and pulling outward. Do not pull on the wheel drive shaft bar.

    The wheel drive shaft will remain firmly in place when properly engaged.

  5. Begin to position the suspension knuckle to the wheel drive shaft.
  6. Align and carefully guide the wheel drive shaft into the hub and bearing but do not seat fully.
  7. Position the suspension knuckle to the upper control arm.
    NOTE: Refer to FASTENER NOTICE .
  8. Install the bolt (1) and nut to the upper control arm/suspension knuckle assembly.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the bolt to 85 N.m (63 lb ft).

  9. Secure the park brake cable bracket.

  10. Install the rear tie rod to the rear suspension knuckle.
  11. Install the tie rod-to-knuckle bolt (2).

    Tighten 

    Tighten the bolt to 85 N.m (63 lb ft).

  12. Install the brake caliper bracket. Refer to REAR BRAKE CALIPER BRACKET .
  13. Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  14. Install the park brake cable routing bracket, if removed.
  15. Install the park brake cable routing bracket nut, if removed.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the nut to 10 N.m (89 lb in).

  16. Set the park brake.
  17. Install a NEW wheel drive shaft spindle nut.
  18. Slowly tighten the nut in order to draw the wheel drive shaft spindle into the wheel hub and bearing.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the wheel drive shaft spindle nut to 260 N.m (192 lb ft).

  19. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  20. Lower the vehicle.
  21. Release the park brake.
