Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE .
  2. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING COOLING SYSTEM .
  3. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  4. Lower the vehicle.
  5. Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to INTAKE MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT - Lower .
  6. Remove the exhaust crosssover pipe. Refer to EXHAUST CROSSOVER PIPE REPLACEMENT .
  7. Remove the thermostat bypass pipe. Refer to THERMOSTAT BYPASS PIPES REPLACEMENT .
  8. Remove the right engine mount strut bracket. Refer to ENGINE MOUNT STRUT BRACKET REPLACEMENT - Right .
  9. Remove the oil level indicator tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  10. Remove the engine left side spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Refer to SPARK PLUGS .
  11. Remove the engine left side spark plugs. Refer to SPARK PLUGS .
  12. Remove the engine left side exhaust manifold. Refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT - LEFT .

  13. Remove and discard the cylinder head bolts.
  14. Remove the cylinder head.

  15. Remove the cylinder head gasket.
  16. Clean the following areas:
    • The gasket sealing surfaces on the cylinder head, cylinder block, and intake manifolds
    • The cylinder block bolt threads
    • The cylinder head bolts
