Removal Procedure

- Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING COOLING SYSTEM in Engine Cooling.
- Drain the engine oil. Refer to ENGINE OIL AND OIL FILTER REPLACEMENT .
- Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to CRANKSHAFT BALANCER REPLACEMENT .
- Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to DRIVE BELT TENSIONER REPLACEMENT .
- Remove the power steering pump with lines. Move the power steering pump aside. Refer to POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACEMENT Power Steering System.
- Disconnect the thermostat bypass pipe from the engine front cover. Refer to THERMOSTAT BYPASS PIPES REPLACEMENT in Engine Cooling.
- Disconnect the radiator outlet hose from the front cover. Refer to RADIATOR HOSE REPLACEMENT - OUTLET in Engine Cooling.
- Remove the coolant pump pulley. Refer to WATER PUMP REPLACEMENT in Engine Cooling.
- Remove the upper crankshaft position sensor wiring harness bracket from the engine front cover.
- Remove the lower crankshaft position sensor wiring harness bracket from the engine front cover.
- Remove the engine front cover bolts (1), (2), and (3).
- Remove the engine front cover.
- Remove the engine front cover gasket.
- Inspect the engine front cover for damage to the engine front cover, crankshaft front oil seal or the gasket sealing surface.
- If you are REPLACING the engine front cover, remove the drive belt shield.
- If you are REPLACING the engine front cover, remove the crankshaft position sensor from the engine front cover. Refer to ENGINE CONTROLS - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION & OVERHAUL or ENGINE CONTROLS - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION & OVERHAUL in Removal and Installation.
- If you are REPLACING the engine front cover, remove the coolant pump from the engine front cover. Refer to WATER PUMP REPLACEMENT in Engine Cooling.
