Removal Procedure

- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to JACKING AND LIFTING in General Information.
- Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING COOLING SYSTEM in Engine Cooling.
- Drain the engine oil. Refer to ENGINE OIL AND OIL FILTER REPLACEMENT .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to INTAKE MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT - LOWER .
- Remove the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to EXHAUST CROSSOVER PIPE REPLACEMENT in Engine Exhaust.
- Remove the engine right side spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Refer to ENGINE CONTROLS - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION & OVERHAUL in Removal and Installation in Engine Performance.
- Remove the engine right side exhaust manifold. Refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT - RIGHT in Engine Exhaust.
- Remove the pushrods and valve rocker arms. Refer to VALVE ROCKER ARM AND PUSH ROD REPLACEMENT .
- Remove the cylinder head bolts.
- Remove the cylinder head.
- Remove the cylinder head gasket.
- Remove the engine right side spark plugs from the cylinder head. Refer to ENGINE CONTROLS - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION & OVERHAUL in Removal and Installation in Engine Performance.
- Clean the following areas:
- The gasket sealing surfaces on the cylinder head, cylinder block, and intake manifolds
- The cylinder block bolt threads
- The cylinder head bolts
- Clean and inspect the cylinder head.
