Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Saturn Vue and 2002 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. With ignition on, engine running. Idle for one minute. Using scan tool, monitor status of DTC P0961. Did last test fail? If so, go to next step. If not, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  2. Using scan tool, monitor ignition voltage. Is ignition voltage greater than 11 volts? If so, go to next step. If not, see appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect the transaxle 20-way harness connector. Check for continuity between transaxle 20-way harness connector terminal No. 16 and ground. Does continuity exist? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  5 .
  4. Inspect line PC solenoid low circuit (5503) for a short to ground. Repair as necessary. If okay, replace TCM. See TRANSAXLE CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  5. Reconnect the transaxle 20-way harness connector. Disconnect TCM harness connector J2. Measure resistance between TCM harness connector J2 terminals No. 50 and 51. If resistance is 2.8-6.8 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 2.8 ohms, go to step  7 . If resistance is greater than 6.8 volts, go to step  8 .
  6. Check for loose terminal connections at TCM. Repair as necessary. If okay, replace TCM. See TRANSAXLE CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  7. Inspect line PC solenoid high (1530) and low (5503) circuits for a shorted together condition. Repair as necessary. If okay, replace control solenoid valve assembly. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.
  8. Inspect line PC solenoid high (1530) and low (5503) circuits for high resistance. Check for loose terminal connections. Repair as necessary. If okay, replace control solenoid valve assembly. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.
