Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue and 2002 Oldsmobile Aurora. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Start engine and allow it to idle. If engine will not start, diagnose no-start condition. See appropriate BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. If engine starts, use scan tool to monitor ignition control status for cylinder that is related to DTC that is set. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION  table. If scan tool continuously indicates OK, no problems is indicated. Fault may be intermittent. If scan tool does not continuously indicate OK, go to next step.

  3. With engine idling, observe ignition misfire current counters on scan tool. If misfire current counters increment for all cylinders on one bank, go to next step. If misfire current counters do not increment for all cylinders on one bank, go to next step. If misfire current counters do not increment for all cylinders on one bank, go to step  8.
  4. Remove and inspect ignition system fuses. If fuse is blown, go to step  12. If fuse is okay, reinstall fuse and go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect the harness connector from the ICM for the affected cylinders. Turn ignition on. Using a test light connected to ground, probe the ignition 1 voltage circuit in the ICM harness. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  13.
  6. Connect test light between the ignition 1 voltage circuit and the ground circuit in ICM harness. Does test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  14.
  7. Measure resistance between the ground circuit and low reference circuit in ICM harness connector. Is resistance less than or equal to 5 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  15.
  8. NOTE: Remove fuel pump fuse before proceeding. Running or cranking engine with an ICM disconnected will cause excessive engine fueling if fuel pump is not disabled.
  9. Turn ignition off. Remove fuel pump fuse. Disconnect ICM connector for affected cylinder. Set Digital Multimeter (DMM) to AC Hertz. Measure frequency of affected cylinder while cranking engine. If frequency is 2-20 Hz, go to step  19. If frequency is not 2-20 Hz, go to next step.
  10. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Use the DMM to measure voltage on the affected ignition control circuit. Is voltage more than 1 volt? If yes, go to step  18. If no, go to next step.
  11. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located in engine compartment, inside air filter housing. Check continuity of affected ignition control circuit terminal between ICM harness connector and PCM harness connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, go to step  16.
  12. Check continuity between ground and affected ignition control circuit terminal at ICM harness connector. If continuity exists, go to step  17. If continuity does not exist, go to step  24.
  13. Check for a short to ground in the ICM ignition 1 voltage circuit. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  26. If no, go to step  21.
  14. Repair open in ICM ignition 1 voltage circuit. After repairs, go to step  26.
  15. Repair open in ICM ground circuit. After repairs, go to step  26.
  16. Repair open or high resistance in ICM low reference circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. After repairs, go to step  26.
  17. Repair open or high resistance in appropriate ignition control circuit. After repairs, go to step  26.
  18. Repair the short to ground in the ignition control circuit. After repairs, go to step  26.
  19. Repair the ignition control circuit shorted to voltage. After repairs, go to step  26.
  20. Turn ignition off. Check continuity between affected ignition control circuit and all other ignition control circuits at ICM harness connectors. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, go to step  21.
  21. Repair ignition control circuits that are shorted together. After repairs, go to step  26.
  22. Check for poor connections at ICM connector. Repair connector as necessary. After repairs, go to step  26. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  23. Remove ICM from coil assembly. If mating connector and seal come off with ICM, remove connector and seal from ICM and install onto coil assembly. With mating connector removed, ICM will have a female connector cavity with male pins. Reconnect harness to ICM. Connect ICM Tester (J-43298) to ICM. Crank engine and observe Light Emitting Diodes (LED) on ICM tester. If LEDs flash for all 3 cylinders, no problem is indicated. Fault may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENT CONDITIONS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If LEDs do not flash for all 3 cylinders, go to next step.
  24. Replace ICM. After repairs, go to step  26.
  25. Check for poor connections at PCM connectors. Repair connectors as necessary. After repairs, go to step  26. If connectors are okay, go to next step.
  26. Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM. See PROGRAMMING . After repairs, go to next step.
  27. Turn ignition off. Reconnect all disconnected connectors. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within conditions for running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . If DTC runs and passes, go to next step. If DTC resets, go to step  2.
  28. Using scan tool, check for any other DTCs that are set. If no other DTCs are set, system is okay. If any other DTCs are set, repair DTCs as necessary. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
