Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Check coolant level. If coolant level is okay, go to next step. If coolant level is low, check cooling system for leaks. Repair as necessary and top off coolant level.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper between the ECT sensor signal circuit and low reference circuit. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Use scan tool in order to observe the ECT sensor temperature. Is ECT sensor temperature more than 280°F (138°C)? If yes, go to step  7. If no, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper between the ECT sensor signal circuit and a ground. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, observe ECT sensor temperature. Is ECT sensor temperature more than 280°F (138°C)? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  6.
  5. Test ECT sensor reference low circuit for a high resistance and for an open. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  10.
  6. Test ECT sensor signal circuit for a high resistance and for an open. Repair the circuit as necessary. After repairs, go to step  10.
  7. Remove ECT sensor. Suspend ECT sensor and a thermometer in a pan of water. Place pan on a burner or hot plate. Measure resistance between ECT sensor terminals with sensor at specified temperature. See ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE  table. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, go to step  9.
  8. Reinstall ECT sensor. Diagnose cooling system thermostat. Replace thermostat as necessary.
  9. Replace ECT sensor. After repairs, go to next step.
  10. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within conditions for running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . If DTC runs and passes, go to next step. If DTC resets, go to step  2.
  11. Using scan tool, check for any other DTCs that are set. If no other DTCs are set, system is okay. If any other DTCs are set, repair DTCs as necessary. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
