Diagnostic Aids

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2002 Pontiac Bonneville, 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 2002 Chevrolet Impala, and 2002 Buick Regal. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: If level of misfire was sufficient to cause possible catalyst damage (if MIL was flashing), ensure that DTC P0420 test has been completed and passed after verifying misfire repair. See DTC P0420: CATALYST SYSTEM LOW EFFICIENCY .

Scan tool provides information that can be useful in identifying misfiring cylinder. If DTC P0300 is currently stored as DTC status FAILED SINCE CODE CLEAR, misfire history counters (MISFIRE HIST #1-#6) will still contain a value that represents level of misfire detected on each cylinder.

A misfire DTC may set if components that affect Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor have recently been replaced, and CKP system variation learn procedure has not been performed. If diagnostic table does not identify a condition, then perform CKP system variation learn procedure. See CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR  under PROGRAMMING. Crankshaft variation learn procedure should be performed if any of the following conditions are true:

Scan tool displayed misfire counter values (MISFIRE HIST. #1-#6) can be useful in determining whether misfire affects a single cylinder, a cylinder pair (cylinders that share an ignition coil such as 1/4, 2/5, or 3/6), or is random. If largest amount of activity is isolated to a cylinder pair, inspect for following conditions:

Switch ignition coils and retest. If misfire follows coil, replace ignition coil.

If misfire is random, check for the following conditions:
