Vibration Analysis - Driveline

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Pontiac Aztek and 2004 Buick Rendezvous. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Vibration Analysis - Driveline

Step Action Yes No
1 Has the Vibration Analysis - Road Testing table been completed? Go to Step 2  Go to Vibration Analysis - Road Testing
2 Did you record frequency data from the J 38792-A  during the Vibration Analysis - Road Testing procedure? See Special Tools and Equipment . Go to Step 3  Go to Step 4
3 Based on the Vibration Analysis - Road Testing table, is the concern first order or sixth order driveline related? Go to Step 5  Go to Step 4
4 Based on the Vibration Analysis - Road Testing table, is the concern a noise that is not felt? Go to Vibration Diagnostic Aids  Go to Vibration Analysis - Road Testing
5 Inspect the following components for wear and/or damage:
  • Inspect the propeller shafts for dents, damage, missing weights, and undercoating.
  • Inspect the propeller shaft constant velocity joints for wear and/or damage.
  • Inspect the torque tube assembly mount for damaged or worn rubber, looseness, and/or a cracked or bent bracket.
  • Inspect the rear differential carrier assembly mounts for damaged or worn rubber, and/or looseness.

Are any of the components listed worn or damaged?
Go to Step 6  Go to Step 7
6 Replace the worn, damaged or missing components. Refer to the appropriate procedure(s).
Did you complete the replacement?
Go to Step 22  -
7 Attempt to duplicate the vibration in the stall. Refer to Vibration in Service-Stall Test (Non-Torque Sensitive)
Were you able to duplicate the vibration?
Go to Step 10  Go to Step 8
8 Perform the Vibration in Service-Stall Test (Torque Sensitive) .
Were you able to duplicate the vibration?
Go to Step 9  Go to Vibration Diagnostic Aids
9
  1. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  2. Perform the Vibration in Service-Stall Test (Torque Sensitive) .
Is the vibration still present?
Go to Diagnostic Starting Point - Transfer Case in Transfer Case - Steyr Go to Diagnostic Starting Point - Rear Differential Carrier in Rear Drive Axle
10 Was the vibration most evident under the rear of the transfer case? Go to Step 11  Go to Step 15
11 Measure the runout of the transfer case output flange. Refer to Transfer Case Output Flange Runout Measurement .
Does the runout measurement require that the transfer case output flange be replaced?
Go to Step 12  Go to Step 13
12
  1. Replace the transfer case output flange. Refer to Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement in Transfer Case - Steyr.
  2. Perform the Vibration in Service-Stall Test (Non-Torque Sensitive) .
Is the vibration still present?
Go to Step 13  Go to Step 22
13
  1. Inspect the engine strut mounts for the following:
    • Loose and/or missing fasteners
    • Improper alignment
    • Cracked, dry-rotted, and/or oil-soaked insulators
    • Twisted, broken, torn, and/or collapsed insulators
    • Bent, twisted, and/or deformed brackets
  2. Replace the engine strut mounts as necessary. Refer to and/or in Engine Mechanical - 3.4L
  3. Inspect the transfer case-to-engine lower brace for looseness or damage.
  4. Tighten or replace the transfer case lower brace as necessary. Refer to Support Brace Replacement (LA1) or Support Brace Replacement (LY7) in Transfer Case - Steyr.
Did you find and correct a condition?
Go to Step 14  Go to Step 15
14 Perform the Vibration in Service-Stall Test (Non-Torque Sensitive) .
Is the vibration still present?
Go to Step 15  Go to Step 22
15 Measure the runout of the torque tube input flange. Refer to Torque Tube Input Flange Runout Measurement .
Does the runout measurement require that the torque tube input flange be replaced?
Go to Step 16  Go to Step 17
16
  1. Replace the torque tube assembly. Refer to Torque Tube Assembly Replacement in Rear Drive Axle.
  2. Perform the Vibration in Service-Stall Test (Non-Torque Sensitive) .
Was the vibration reduced or eliminated?
Go to Step 22  Go to Step 17
17
  1. Replace the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  2. Perform the Vibration in Service-Stall Test (Non-Torque Sensitive) .
Was the vibration reduced or eliminated?
Go to Step 22  Go to Step 18
18 Determine the runout of the rear axle differential pinion input shaft. Refer to the Differential Pinion Input Shaft Runout Measurement .
Does the runout measurement require that the pinion input shaft be replaced?
Go to Step 19  Go to Step 20
19 Replace the rear axle differential pinion assembly. Refer to Drive Pinion Housing and/or Seal Replacement in Rear Drive Axle.
Did you complete the replacement?
Go to Step 22  -
20 Re-index the propeller shaft. Perform the following steps:
  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Mark the position of the propeller shaft on both the transfer case output shaft flange and the torque tube input flange.
  3. Remove the propeller shaft.
  4. Rotate the propeller shaft 180 degrees to both of the flanges.
  5. Reinstall the propeller shaft.
  6. Attempt to duplicate the vibration in the stall. Refer to the Vibration in Service-Stall Test (Non-Torque Sensitive) .
