Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Buick Park Avenue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition on and observe AIR BAG warning light. If light flashes 7 times, go to next step. If light does not flash, go to AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION .
  2. Install scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, check power and ground circuits for DLC and repair as necessary.
  3. Check scan tool communication with SDM. If scan tool communicates with SDM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with SDM, check Class 2 Data Serial circuit and repair as necessary.
  4. Using scan tool, request DTCs. If current or history DTCs exist, go to next step. If no DTCs exist, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS.
  5. If scan tool displays any "U" type DTCs, repair other systems as indicated on scan tool before attempting air bag system repairs. If no "U" type DTCs are displayed, go to next step.
  6. Follow diagnostic procedures for displayed DTCs.
