Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 GMC Sonoma and 2003 Chevrolet S10 Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Shift the transmission into 3rd or 4th mechanical gear position.
  2. Remove the shift tower. Refer to SHIFT TOWER REPLACEMENT  in Manual Transmission - NV 1500.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE in General Information.
  4. Drain the transmission fluid.
  5. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to PROPELLER SHAFT REPLACEMENT - ONE PIECE or PROPELLER SHAFT REPLACEMENT - TWO PIECE in Propeller Shaft.

  6. Remove the exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD PIPE REPLACEMENT in Engine Exhaust.
  7. Remove the left side transmission to engine brace bolts and nut.
  8. Remove the left side transmission to engine brace.
  9. Remove the right side transmission to engine brace bolts.
  10. Remove the right side transmission to engine brace.

  11. Use the J 42371  , push back on the white plastic sleeve on the quick connect in order to separate the hydraulic clutch line from the concentric slave cylinder quick connect.
  12. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor electrical connector.
  13. Disconnect the back up lamp switch electrical connector.
  14. Remove the wiring harness from the harness retainers.

  15. Remove the clutch housing cover bolts.
  16. Remove the clutch housing cover.
  17. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  18. Remove the transmission support frame. Refer to TRANSMISSION SUPPORT REPLACEMENT (RWD) or TRANSMISSION SUPPORT REPLACEMENT (4WD) in Frame and Underbody.

  19. Remove the transmission to engine bolts.
  20. Pull the transmission straight back on the clutch hub splines. Do not let the transmission hang from the clutch plate and the clutch cover.
  21. Lower the transmission using the transmission jack.
