Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove cylinder heads. See CYLINDER HEAD . Remove valve lifters. See VALVE LIFTERS . Remove charged air cooler, air conditioner condenser and starter. Install Flywheel Holding (J-44643) in starter opening and remove crankshaft balancer bolt and camshaft drive gear bolt. Remove engine front cover. See FRONT COVER .
  2. Remove oil pump driven gear nut and gear. Remove oil pump drive gear and crankshaft reluctor assembly. Measure camshaft end play using Dial Indicator Set (J-7872). The production value is 0.002-0.0045" (0.050-0.114 mm) and service limit is 0.008" (0.20 mm). Replace camshaft or camshaft thrust plate if measured value exceeds service limit. Replace camshaft gear or camshaft thrust plate, if value exceeds service limit. See CAMSHAFT  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  3. Block crankshaft from turning with a wooden handle. Loosen camshaft gear bolt and leave bolt finger tight. Remove camshaft exciter ring bolts. Remove camshaft exciter ring. Remove camshaft thrust plate bolts through holes in camshaft gear.
  4. Remove camshaft with camshaft gear attached. Remove camshaft gear bolt and washer. Remove camshaft gear. Remove camshaft thrust plate.
