Test B: Shift Lever Can Be Moved Without Brake Pedal Depressed

- Did you perform the diagnostic system check? If so, go to next step. If not, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Apply the parking brake and block the wheels. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Attempt to move the gearshift lever out of the Park position. Does the gearshift lever move out of the Park position? If so, go to next step. If not, check for intermittent condition. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
- Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Connect a test light between ground and the stoplamp switch voltage supply circuit (Light Green wire) at the stoplamp switch. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 7 .
- Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Connect a test light between ground and the shift lock solenoid voltage supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire) at the stoplamp switch. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 13 .
- Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Connect a test light between ground and the shift lock solenoid voltage supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire) at the shift lock solenoid. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 17 .
- Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Connect a test light between the shift lock solenoid voltage supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire) and the shift lock solenoid ground circuit (Black wire) at the shift lock solenoid. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to step 14 . If not, go to step 18 .
- Install a scan tool. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. With a scan tool, observe the PARK RELAY status in the RIM data list. Does the scan tool display ON? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 15 .
- Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Disconnect the park relay. Connect a test light between ground and the park relay coil side feed circuit. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 19 .
- Connect a test light between ground and the park relay switch side feed circuit. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 20 .
- Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Connect a test light between the park relay coil side feed circuit and the park relay control circuit (Pink/Black wire). Turn ignition switch to he ON position. With a scan tool, command the park relay ON and OFF. Does the test light turn ON and OFF with each command? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 12 .
- Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper between the switch side feed circuit and the stoplamp switch voltage supply circuit at the park relay. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Apply the parking brake and block the wheels. Attempt to move the gearshift lever out of the Park position without depressing the brake pedal. Did the gearshift lever move out of the Park position? If so, go to step 21 . If not, go to step 16 .
- Test for an open or short to battery voltage in the park relay control circuit (Pink/Black wire). Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 26 . If not, go to step 15 .
- Inspect the stoplamp switch for poor connections. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 26 . If not, go to step 22 .
- Inspect for poor connections at the shift lock control solenoid. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 26 . If not, go to step 23 .
- Inspect the RIM for poor connections. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 26 . If not, go to step 25 .
- Inspect the park relay for poor connections. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 26 . If not, go to step 24 .
- Repair the open or short to ground in the shift lock solenoid voltage supply circuit (Dark Green/White wire). After repairs, go to step 26 .
- Repair the open in the shift lock solenoid ground circuit (Black wire). After repairs, go to step 26 .
- Repair the open or high resistance in the park relay coil side feed circuit. After repairs, go to step 26 .
- Repair the open or high resistance in the park relay switch side feed circuit. After repairs, go to step 26 .
- Repair the open or high resistance in the stoplamp switch supply voltage circuit (Light Green wire). After repairs, go to step 26 .
- Replace the stoplamp switch. See STOPLAMP SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step 26 .
- Replace the shift lock solenoid. See SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step 26 .
- Replace the park relay (located in rear fuse block). After repairs, go to step 26 .
- Replace the RIM. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. After repairs, go to next step.
- Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, system is okay. If not, go to step 2 .
