Cylinder Boring And Honing (Unit Repair)

- Measure cylinder bore for out-of-round and taper.
- Measure the first dimension at 13 mm (1/2 in.) below the head gasket surface. Measure the second dimension at 100 mm (4 in.) below the head gasket surface.
- Measure cylinder bores by setting cylinder gauge dial at zero in cylinder at point of desired measurement. Lock dial indicator at zero before removing dial from cylinder. Measure across gauge contact points with an outside micrometer, with gauge at same zero setting as when gauge was removed from cylinder.
- Fine vertical scratches made by ring ends do not, by themselves, cause excessive oil consumption. Do not hone cylinder in order to remove these scratches.
- If bore is glazed but otherwise serviceable, lightly break glaze with a hone. Replace piston rings. Refer to PISTON AND CONNECTING ROD ASSEMBLE (UNIT REPAIR) .
- Honing stones must be clean, sharp, and straight.
- Move hone slowly up and down to produce a 45° cross hatch pattern.
- Clean bore thoroughly with soap and water.
- Dry the bore.
- Rub clean engine oil in the bore.
- Remeasure the bore.
- If honing is not required, clean cylinder bores with hot water and detergent. Apply clean engine oil to bore after washing and drying the bore.
- If cylinder bore is out of specification, bore cylinder for oversize pistons.
