Park Brake Hardware: Removal

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Remove the tire and the wheel. Remove the brake drum.
  2. Remove the return spring. Use the Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Remover (J-38400) in order to pry the loop end of the adjuster spring from the adjuster actuator. Then disengage the adjuster spring from the web of the parking brake shoe. Remove the lift end of the universal spring from the adjuster shoe and the lining. Insert the hook end of the Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Remover between the universal spring and the adjuster shoe web.
  3. Pull and twist the Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Remover in order to lift the end of the spring out of the shoe web hole. Pull the end of the universal spring toward the axle with the flat edge of the Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Remover until it snaps down off the shoe web onto the backing plate. Remove the adjuster actuator from the following components: The brake shoe, the brake lining and the adjusting screw. Remove the parking brake lever from the brake shoe. Remove the parking brake lever from the parking brake cable.
