Wheel Bearing Diagnosis

- Did you review the General Description and perform the necessary inspections? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to SYMPTOMS - SUSPENSION GENERAL DIAGNOSIS .
- Road test the vehicle in order to verify the customer's complaint. Does the vehicle operate normally? If yes, system is okay. If no, go to next step.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Inspect for tire or wheel damage. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 7. If no, go to next step.
- Install the J 39570 chassis ear. See SPECIAL TOOLS . Road test the vehicle to verify the location of the wheel bearing noise. Did you locate the source of the wheel bearing noise? If yes, go to step 6. If no, go to next step.
- Mount and secure the J 8001 dial indicator. See SPECIAL TOOLS . Ensure that the dial indicator contacts the vertical surface of the wheel as close as possible to the top wheel stud. Push and pull on the top of the tire in order to inspect the total travel indicated by the dial indicator. Is the measurement greater than 0.27 mm (0.005 in)? If yes, go to next step. If no, system is okay.
- Replace the wheel bearing. Refer to FRONT SUSPENSION . After repairs, go to next step.
- Road test the vehicle to verify the repair. Does the vehicle operate normally? If yes, system is okay. If no, go to step 3.
NOTE:
Support the vehicle by the lower control arms or the rear axle to prevent movement during wheel bearing/hub inspection.
