Brake Warning Indicator Always On

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn the ignition switch off. Disconnect the brake fluid level sensor. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. Does the BRAKE indicator still illuminate? If so, go to step  3 . If not, go to next step.
  2. Replace the brake fluid level sensor. See MASTER CYLINDER FLUID LEVEL SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Has the repair been made and the system rechecked? If so, system is okay.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Disconnect the park brake switch. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. Does the BRAKE indicator still illuminate? If so, go to step  5 . If not, go to next step.
  4. Replace the park brake warning lamp switch. See PARK BRAKE WARNING LIGHT SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Has the repair been made and the system rechecked? If so, system is okay.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Disconnect the Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) control module connector C2. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. Does the BRAKE indicator still illuminate? If so, go to step  7 . If not, go to next step.
  6. Inspect for a short to ground in the signal circuit going to the DRL module. If the circuit is okay, replace the DRL control module. See DRL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Has the repair been made and the system rechecked? If so, system is okay.
  7. Disconnect the ignition switch. Does the BRAKE indicator still illuminate? If so, go to step  9 . If not, go to next step.
  8. Replace the ignition switch. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in STEERING. Has the repair been made and the system rechecked? If so, system is okay.
  9. Inspect for a short to ground on the signal circuit going to the BRAKE indicator. If the circuit is okay, replace the instrument cluster. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in GAUGES & INSTRUMENT PANELS in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Has the repair been made and the system rechecked? If so, system is okay.
