Axle Shaft: Removal

NOTE: Required Tools: Slide Hammer (J-2619-O1), Axle Shaft Remover Extension (J-29794), Axle Shaft Puller (J-33008-A) and Wheel Hub Remover (J-42129).
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove tire and wheel assembly. Remove and discard axle shaft nut.
  2. Release the parking brake. Remove and support the brake caliper bracket. See REAR BRAKE CALIPER BRACKET under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in DISC & DRUM article.
  3. Remove nut securing parking brake cable routing bracket, if necessary. Remove the bolt retaining the rear tie rod end from the rear suspension knuckle. DO NOT loosen tie rod end jam nut.
  4. Loosen, but do not remove, the bolts securing the parking brake cable bracket to the suspension knuckle. Disconnect wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  5. Install the Wheel Hub Remover onto the wheel hub and secure with wheel nuts. Begin to disengage the axle shaft from the wheel hub and bearing. Remove the bolt and nut securing the upper control arm to the suspension knuckle. Disengage the axle shaft completely from the wheel hub and bearing.
  6. Reposition the suspension knuckle toward the rear of the vehicle. Remove the Wheel Hub Remover from the wheel hub. Assemble the Axle Shaft Puller, Axle Shaft Remover Extension, and Slide Hammer. Install the Axle Shaft Puller evenly onto the rear beveled surface of the axle shaft inner joint housing.
  7. Disengage the axle shaft from the rear axle differential using the Axle Shaft Puller, Axle Shaft Remover Extension, and Slide Hammer, then remove the tool assembly.
    8. NOTE: The differential output shaft oil seal must be replaced when removing the rear axle shaft.
  8. Remove axle shaft from vehicle. Replace rear axle shaft oil seal. See AXLE SHAFT SEALS
