Inner Joint & Seal: Reassembly

  1. Place the new small seal clamp onto the small end of the joint seal. See Fig 1 . Slide the joint seal and the small seal clamp onto the axle shaft bar. Position the small end of the joint seal into the joint seal groove on the axle shaft bar.
  2. Using the Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers, crimp the small seal retaining clamp. Tighten the clamp to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install a new barrel retaining ring to the axle shaft bar.
    3. NOTE: Ensure that the beveled edge of the tripod spider faces the axle shaft bar during reassembly.
  3. Align the reference mark on the tripod spider and the axle shaft bar. Install the tripod spider to the axle shaft bar, while compressing the barrel retaining ring with a flat-bladed tool. Verify positive engagement of the tripod spider to the axle shaft bar by grasping the tripod spider and attempting to pull free from the axle shaft bar.
    4. NOTE: Ensure the trilobal tripod bushing is flush with the face of the housing.
  4. Place approximately 1/2 of the grease from the service kit in the axle shaft inboard seal. Use the remainder of the grease to repack the housing. Install the spring to the tripod housing. Use grease from the housing in order to retain the spring.
  5. Install guide to spring. Use grease from housing in order to retain the guide. Install trilobal tripod bushing to the housing. Position the larger new seal retaining clamp on the axle shaft inboard seal. See Figure . Slide housing over the tripod joint spider assembly on the axle shaft bar.
  6. Slide the large diameter of the axle shaft inboard seal, with the larger clamp in place, over the outside of the trilobal tripod bushing and locate the lip of the seal in the groove. Inspect the seal for proper shape. If the seal is not shaped correctly, equalize the pressure in the seal by lifting the seal edge slightly and shape the seal properly by hand. Position the joint assembly at the proper vehicle dimension.
  7. Align the following items while latching:
    • The axle shaft inboard seal.
    • The tripod housing.
    • The large seal retaining clamp.
  8. Using the Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers, latch the large seal retaining clamp. Ensure that the latching tangs are fully engaged in the large seal clamp band. Rotate the inner tripod housing 4 or 5 times in order to distribute the grease throughout the tripod spider bearings.
