Differential Assembly: Disassembly

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Montana, 2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette, and 2003 Chevrolet Venture. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Complete disassembly procedures are not available from manufacturer. Information provided is a simple strip-down procedure. DO NOT disassemble the side cover or differential assembly. Oil seal damage or the entry of foreign material into the hydraulic system may effect system operation.
  1. Remove the lubricant drain plug and gasket from the differential. Allow the lubricant to drain. Remove vent hose assembly and clamp. See Figure . Remove clutch pump check valve. See DIFFERENTIAL CLUTCH PUMP CHECK VALVE  . Remove "O" rings from check valve, if required. The O-ring seals may be reused if not cut or damaged. See Figure .
  2. NOTE: Do not remove the dampeners from the torque tube. Removal and reinstallation may effect component noise and/or vibration levels.
  3. Remove torque tube bracket nut, bolt and spacers. See Figure . Remove torque tube bracket. Remove torque tube-to-differential bolts. Separate torque tube from differential. Remove bolts from differential.
  4. Remove pinion housing and shim. Remove oil seal and "O" ring from pinion housing. Remove left and right axle shaft oil seals.
