Axle Shaft: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Aztek, 2003 Buick Rendezvous, 2002 Pontiac Aztek, 2002 Buick Rendezvous, and 2001 Pontiac Aztek. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Prevent the boots (seals) from contacting the other components in order to prevent damage to the boots.
  1. Install a NEW axle shaft retaining ring:
    • On the right axle shaft, the retaining ring is on the splined shaft of the inner tripot housing.
    • On the left axle shaft, the retaining ring is on the splined transmission output shaft.
  2. Install the axle shaft to the transaxle. See Fig 1 . Push the axle shaft into transaxle until the retaining ring is fully seated.
  3. Verify that the axle shaft retaining ring is properly seated.
    1. Grasp the inner (tripot) housing.
    2. Pull the inner (tripot) housing outboard. DO NOT pull on the axle shaft bar. The axle shaft will remain in place when the retaining ring is properly seated.
  4. Install the axle shaft to the wheel hub and bearing. Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle. See appropriate FRONT article in SUSPENSION. Connect the outer tie rod end assembly to the steering knuckle. See appropriate POWER RACK & PINION article in STEERING.
  5. NOTE: Ensure that the 2-piece, ramped washer is installed prior to installing the axle shaft nut. The ramped sides of the washer must face each other.
  6. Install the 2-piece, ramped washer to the axle shaft spindle. See Fig 2 . Install a NEW axle shaft nut.
  7. Insert a drift or a flat-bladed tool through the caliper and into the brake rotor to prevent the rotor from turning. See Figure . Tighten the axle shaft nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  8. Install the stabilizer shaft link. See appropriate AZTEK & RENDEZVOUS article in SUSPENSION. Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  9. Install the engine splash shield. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Lower the vehicle. Inspect the transaxle fluid level.
