Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 GMC Sonoma, 2003 GMC Jimmy, 2003 Chevrolet S10 Pickup, and 2003 Chevrolet Blazer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If SIR Diagnostic System Check has been performed, go to next step. If SIR Diagnostic System Check has not been performed, go to SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
  2. Install scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), located under left side of instrument panel. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe passenger-side air bag module disable switch ACTIVE data parameter in SDM DATA LIST. If scan tool indicates that switch is DISABLED, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate switch is DISABLED, go to step  4.
  3. Activate passenger-side air bag module disable switch. With scan tool, observe switch data parameter. If data parameter does not change, go to next step. If data parameter does change, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module disable switch connector. See PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE DISABLE SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition on. Observe scan tool data parameter. If scan tool indicates switch is disabled, go to step  7. If scan tool does not indicate switch is disabled, go to next step.
    NOTE: Use Digital Multimeter (J-39200) and Connector Test Adapter Kit (J-35616-A) or Flat WIre Probe Adapter Kit (J-42675) when performing electrical tests.
  5. Measure resistance between disable switch connector terminals "A" and "C". If resistance is infinite, go to next step. If resistance is not infinite, repair short. See WIRE REPAIR . Go to step  10.
  6. Inspect SDM connector for poor connections. If a poor connection is found and corrected, go to step  10. See WIRE REPAIR . If a poor connection is not found, go to step  8.
  7. Inspect passenger-side air bag module switch connector for signs of poor connections. If a poor connection is found and corrected, go to step  10. See WIRE REPAIR . If a poor connection is not found, go to next step.
  8. Replace SDM. See SENSING & DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  10.
  9. Replace passenger-side air bag module disable switch. See PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE DISABLE SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to next step.
  10. Reconnect all SIR components. Ensure that all components are properly mounted and connected. Using scan tool, clear all SIR DTC's. Road test vehicle, then check for DTC's. If DTC is retrieved, go to step  2. If DTC is not retrieved, system is normal.
