Front Cover: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Savana Special, 2002 GMC Savana Camper Special, 2002 GMC Savana, 2002 Chevrolet RV Cutaway, and 2002 Chevrolet Cutaway. NOTE: Required Tools: Front Cover Seal Installer (J-22102).
  1. Use the Front Cover Seal Installer to install the new front crankshaft front oil seal. See Fig 1. Apply a 3/32" (2 mm) bead of anaerobic sealant GM P/N 1052942 or equivalent to the engine front cover. Apply a 3/16" (5 mm) bead of RTV sealant GM P/N 12346286 to the engine front cover sealing surface that mates against the oil pan.
  2. Install the engine front cover to the engine block. See Figure. Install the bolts retaining engine front cover to the engine block. Tighten the front cover bolts to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  3. Install the bolts retaining the oil pan to the engine front cover. Tighten the oil pan bolts to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the nuts retaining the fuel injection pump to the front cover. Tighten the nuts to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  4. Install the fuel injection pump drive gear and bolts to the fuel injection pump. Tighten the bolts to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the crankshaft balancer to the crankshaft. See CRANKSHAFT BALANCER .
  5. Raise the vehicle. Install the crankshaft position sensor to the engine front cover. See CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  6. Lower the vehicle. Install the water pump to the engine block. See WATER PUMP . Fill the cooling system. See DRAINING & FILLING COOLING SYSTEM .
  7. Install the engine oil fill tube to the front cover. Connect the battery negative cables to the batteries and tighten cables to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Perform the TDC offset adjustment. See FUEL INJECTION PUMP TDC OFFSET ADJUSTMENT  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS.
