Removal & Installation: Engine: Removal

  1. Disconnect and remove batteries. Remove hood. Remove the engine cover from the vehicle. Drain cooling system. Remove the front bumper from the vehicle. Remove the grille from the vehicle. Remove the auxiliary engine oil cooler from the vehicle (if needed). Remove the transmission oil cooler (if equipped). Remove the radiator from the vehicle.
  2. Discharge A/C system using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. See RECOVERY/EVACUATION & RECHARGING in GENERAL SERVICING PROCEDURES article in HVAC. Disconnect A/C condenser lines. Remove the radiator support bolts from the radiator support. Disconnect the forward lamp harness electrical connector. Remove the ground strap bolts from the right and left fenders. Remove the radiator support with the A/C condenser. Remove the engine lift bracket from the engine assembly. Remove generator mounting bracket from the engine assembly. Remove the engine wiring harnesses from the left and right side of the engine assembly. See Figure and Figure .
  3. Remove the turbocharger assembly from the engine block. See TURBOCHARGER . Remove the exhaust manifolds from the cylinder heads. See EXHAUST MANIFOLD . Remove the lower intake manifold from the engine block. See INTAKE MANIFOLD . Raise the vehicle. Remove the starter motor. Remove the transmission oil cooler lines from the retainers on the engine oil pan and secure to the side. Remove the engine oil cooler lines from the engine and secure to the side.
  4. Remove the bolts securing the converter cover to the transmission. Mark the flywheel and the torque converter alignment. Remove the bolts that attach the torque converter to the engine flywheel. Remove the studs and the bolts securing the transmission to the engine. Remove the ground strap and negative battery cable from the engine. Remove the electrical connector from the block heater. Remove the engine oil filter.
  5. Lower vehicle. Install a length of chain using either engine lift brackets on rear of right cylinder head and front of left head, or equivalent attaching bolt. Support transmission with a strap between frame rails. Lift engine slightly and remove engine mount through-bolts and remove engine mounts. Remove engine from vehicle.
