Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Cadillac Seville and 2003 Cadillac DeVille. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. NOTE: If DTC P0385 is set, diagnose DTC P0385 first. See DTC P0385: CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR 2 CIRCUIT .
  3. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect CKP sensor "A" connector. Test the CKP sensor "A" 12-volt reference circuit for an intermittent open or an intermittent short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  7. If no, go to next step.
  4. Test the CKP sensor "A" low reference circuit for an intermittent open. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  7. If no, go to next step.
  5. Test the CKP sensor "A" signal 2 circuit for the following conditions:
    • An intermittent open.
    • An intermittent short to sensor 12-volt reference circuit or battery voltage.
    • An intermittent short to ground or sensor low reference circuit.
    • Poor terminal contact at CKP sensor "A".

Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  7. If no, go to next step.

  6. Test for an intermittent and/or poor connections at the CKP sensor "A". Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  7. If no, go to next step.
  7. Test for an intermittent and/or poor connections at the PCM. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  8. Lower the vehicle. Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Turn off the ignition for 30 seconds. Start the engine. Command the system to operate in Time "A" mode with the scan tool. See PROCEDURES FOR SELECTING CRANK POSITION SENSING DECODE MODE  under Diagnostic Aids. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions For Running DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Did the DTC fail this ignition cycle? If yes, go to step  2. If no, go to next step.
  9. Observe the Capture Info with a scan tool. Are there any DTCs that have not been diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
