Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform powertrain diagnostic system check. See POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK . After performing powertrain diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. NOTE: If any DTCs are set, except P1133 or P1153, refer to those DTCs before proceeding with this diagnostic table. see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
  3. Idle engine at normal operating temperature. Operate vehicle within code enable criteria. Using scan tool, monitor DTC INFORMATION. If DTC P1133 or P1153 failed this ignition cycle, go to next step. If DTC P1133 or P1153 did not fail this ignition cycle, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  4. If both DTC P1133 and P1153 failed this ignition cycle, go to step  8. If both DTC P1133 and P1153 did not fail this ignition cycle, go to next step.
  5. Inspect for an exhaust system leak. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  14. If problem was not found, go to next step.
  6. Inspect the following items:
    • HO2S is securely installed.
    • Corrosion on terminals.
    • Terminal tension at HO2S and at PCM.
    • Damaged wiring.

    If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  14. If problem was not found, go to next step.

  7. Disconnect HO2S. Connect a jumper wire between HO2S connector terminal "A" (Tan wire or Tan/White wire) and ground. See Figure. Using scan tool, monitor HO2S voltage on ENGINE 1 data list. If scan tool indicates a voltage within 350-550 millivolts, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate a voltage within 350-550 millivolts, go to step  10.
  8. Connect a jumper wire between HO2S connector terminal "A" (Tan wire or Tan/White wire) and ground. Connect a second jumper wire between HO2S connector terminal "B" (Purple wire or Purple/White wire) and ground. Using scan tool, monitor HO2S voltage. If scan tool indicates a voltage less than 200 millivolts, go to step  13. If scan tool does not indicate a voltage less than 200 millivolts, go to step  9.
  9. NOTE: Determine and correct cause of contamination before replacing a sensor. Inspect for fuel contamination, use of an improper RTV sealant, engine oil consumption and coolant consumption.
  10. Replace affected HO2S. After repairs, go to step  14.
  11. Remove jumper wire from HO2S connector terminal "A" (Tan wire or Tan/White wire). Using a DVOM, measure voltage between HO2S connector terminal "A" (Tan wire or Tan/White wire) and ground. If voltage is about 5 volts, go to step  12. If voltage is not about 5 volts, go to step  11.
  12. Repair short to ground or short to voltage in Purple wire or Purple/White wire between HO2S and PCM. After repairs, go to step  14.
  13. Repair open in Tan wire or Tan/White wire between HO2S and PCM, or poor connections at PCM connector. After repairs, go to step  14.
  14. Repair open in Purple wire or Purple/White wire between HO2S and PCM, or poor connections at PCM connector. After repairs, go to step  14.
  15. Replace appropriate HO2S. After repairs, go to next step.
  16. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within code enable criteria. If DTC runs and passes, go to next step. If DTC does not run and pass, go to step  2.
  17. Using scan tool, observe stored information. If scan tool displays any DTCs that have not been diagnosed, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If scan tool does not display any DTCs, system is okay.
