Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform powertrain diagnostic system check. See POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK . After performing powertrain diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Install scan tool. Turn ignition on, engine off. Select TR SW. on scan tool. Using scan tool, observe TR SW. display while selecting each transmission range: P, R, N, D3, D2 and D1. If each selected transmission range matches scan tool TR SW. display, seeINTERMITTENT TROUBLE CODE DETERMINATION  under ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If each selected transmission range does not match scan tool TR SW. display, go to next step.
  3. Inspect Park Neutral Position (PNP) switch assembly for damage, loose or missing mounting hardware, and proper adjustment. PNP switch assembly is located on transmission behind control lever. Inspect shift cable for damaged or stretched cable, and proper adjustment. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If problem was not found, go to next step.
  4. Using scan tool, observe TR SW. A/B/C/P display. If scan tool TR SW. A/B/C/P parameter indicates HI for all range signal states, go to step  13. If scan tool TR SW. A/B/C/P parameter does not indicate HI for all range signal states, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TR switch connector C2. Turn ignition on, engine off. If scan tool TR SW. A/B/C/P parameter indicates HI for all range signal states, go to next step. If scan tool TR SW. A/B/C/SP parameter does not indicate HI for all range signal states, go to step  10.
  6. Using DVOM and Connector Test Adapter Kit (J 35616-A), measure voltage between TR switch connector C2 terminal "A" (Black/White wire) and ground. See Fig 1. Measure voltage TR switch connector C2 terminal "B" (Gray wire) and ground. Measure voltage between TR switch connector C2 terminal "C" (White wire) and ground. Measure voltage between TR switch connector C2 terminal "D" (Yellow wire) and ground. If voltage 10-12 volts at all 4 terminals, go to next step. If voltage is not 10-12 volts at all 4 terminals, go to step  11.
  7. Connect a fused jumper wire between TR switch connector C2 terminal "A" (Black/White wire) and ground while monitoring scan tool TR SW. A/B/C/P parameter. If any other signal circuits indicate LOW when signal "A" circuit is grounded, go to step  12. If no other signal circuits indicate LOW when signal "A" circuit is grounded, go to next step.
  8. Connect a fused jumper wire between TR switch connector C2 terminal "D" (Yellow wire) and ground while monitoring scan tool TR SW. A/B/C/P parameter. If any other signal circuits indicate LOW when signal "B" circuit is grounded, go to step  12. If no other signal circuits indicate LOW when signal "B" circuit is grounded, go to next step.
  9. Connect a fused jumper wire between TR switch connector C2 terminal "B" (Gray wire) and ground while monitoring scan tool TR SW. A/B/C/P parameter. If any other signal circuits indicate LOW when signal "C" circuit is grounded, go to step  12. If no other signal circuits indicate LOW when signal "C" circuit is grounded, go to step  14.
  10. Check signal circuit(s) of TR switch that did not indicate HI for short to ground. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If problem was not found, go to step  15.
  11. Check signal circuit(s) of TR switch that did not indicate proper voltage for open. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If problem was not found, go to step  15.
  12. Check affected signal circuits of TR switch for a shorted together condition. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If problem was not found, go to step  15.
  13. Check Black/White wire between TR switch and ground for open. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If problem was not found, go to next step.
  14. Replace TR switch (this switch is part of park/neutral position (PNP) switch). After repairs, go to step  16.
  15. Replace PCM. Program PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to next step.
  16. Using scan tool, clear DTC. Drive vehicle at more 5 MPH for a short distance, then stop vehicle. Select each transmission range: P, R, N, D3, D2 and D1. Place transmission in Park. Using scan tool, check DTC. If DTC has run and passed, system is okay. If DTC has not run and passed, go to step  1.
