Diagnostic Procedures

- Perform powertrain diagnostic system check. See POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing powertrain diagnostic system check, go to next step.
- Inspect AIR maxifuse (30-amp). AIR maxifuse is located in underhood fuse block. If fuse is open, go to step 13. If fuse is not open, go to next step.
- Inspect ENG-1 fuse (20-amp). ENG-1 fuse is located in underhood fuse block. If fuse is open, go to step 29. If fuse is not open, go to next step.
- Install scan tool. Start engine and allow engine to run for 2 minutes. Verify engine is running at normal operating temperature and is in closed loop. Using scan tool, command AIR pump on. If Short Term Fuel Trim (STFT) indicates a change of more than 20 percent within 30 seconds, go to next step. If STFT does not indicate a change of more than 20 percent within 30 seconds, go to step 6.
- DTC is intermittent. If any additional DTCs are stored, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no additional DTCs are stored, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, command AIR pump on. If AIR pump is running, go to next step. If AIR pump is not running, go to step 9.
- Using scan tool, command AIR pump off. If AIR pump is off, go to step 16. If AIR pump is not off, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect AIR pump relay. AIR pump relay is located in underhood fuse block. Turn ignition on, engine off. If AIR pump is on, go to step 34. If AIR pump is off, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect AIR pump relay. AIR pump relay is located in underhood fuse block. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using a test light connected to ground, probe AIR pump relay connector terminal No. 30 (Red wire). If test light is on, go to next step. If test light is off, go to step 31.
- Connect a fused jumper wire between AIR pump relay connector terminals No. 30 (Red wire) and No. 87 (Red wire). If AIR pump turns on, go to step 22. If AIR pump does not turn on, go to next step.
- Leave jumper installed. Disconnect AIR pump connector. Using a test light connected to ground, probe AIR pump connector terminal "A" (Red wire). If test light is on, go to next step. If test light is off, go to step 33.
- Leave jumper installed. Connect a test light between AIR pump connector terminals. If test light is on, go to step 37. If test light is off, go to step 39.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect AIR pump relay. AIR pump relay is located in underhood fuse block. Remove AIR maxifuse (30-amp). Using test light connected to battery voltage, probe AIR pump relay terminal No. 30 (Red wire). If test light is on, go to step 32. If test light is not on, go to next step.
- Disconnect connectors from AIR pump and AIR solenoid. Using a test light connected to battery voltage, probe AIR pump connector terminal "A" (Red wire) and AIR solenoid connector terminal "A" (Red wire). If test light is on, go to step 35. If test light is off, go to next step.
- Reinstall the following components/connectors:
- New AIR maxifuse.
- AIR pump relay.
- AIR pump solenoid.
Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, command AIR pump on. If AIR maxifuse opens, go to step 45. If AIR maxifuse does not open, go to step 30.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect AIR solenoid connector. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using test light connected to ground, probe AIR solenoid connector terminal "A" (Red wire). Using scan tool, command AIR pump on. If test light is on, go to next step. If test light is off, go to step 33.
- Connect a test light between AIR solenoid connector terminals. Using scan tool, command AIR pump on. If test light is on, go to next step. If test light is off, go to step 37.
- Disconnect vacuum harness from AIR solenoid. Connect a vacuum gauge to vacuum source hose. Start engine. If reading on gauge is more than 10 in. Hg, go to next step. If reading on gauge is not more than 10 in. Hg, go to step 38.
- Reconnect only vacuum supply hose to AIR solenoid. Connect a vacuum gauge to other port of AIR solenoid. Using scan tool, command AIR pump on with engine running. If reading on gauge is more than 10 in. Hg, go to next step. If reading on gauge is not more than 10 in. Hg, go to step 45.
- Reconnect vacuum hose to AIR solenoid. Disconnect AIR shut-off valve inlet hose at AIR shut-off valve. Start engine. Using scan tool, command AIR pump on. If airflow is present at AIR shut-off valve inlet hose, go to next step. If airflow is not present at AIR shut-off valve inlet hose, go to step 37.
- Reconnect AIR inlet hose to AIR shut-off valve. Disconnect AIR shut off valve output hose at AIR shut-off valve. Start engine. Using scan tool, command AIR pump on. If air flows from AIR shut-off valve, go to step 28. If air does not flow from AIR shut-off valve, go to step 40.
- Turn ignition on. Using test light connected to ground, probe AIR pump relay connector terminal No. 85 (Pink wire). If test light is on, go to next step. If test light is off, go to step 31.
- Using a test light connected to battery voltage, probe AIR pump relay connector terminal No. 86 (Brown wire). Using scan tool, command AIR pump on. If test light is on, go to next step. If test light is off, go to step 25.
- Using test light connected to battery voltage, probe AIR connector terminal No. 86 (Brown wire). Using scan tool, command AIR pump off. If test light is off, go to step 36. If test light is on, go to step 27.
- Disconnect PCM connectors. Using test light connected to ground, probe AIR pump relay connector terminal No. 86 (Brown wire). If test light is on, go to step 42. If test light is off, go to next step.
- Check Brown wire between AIR pump relay and PCM for continuity. If continuity exists, go to step 46. If continuity does not exist, go to step 41.
- Disconnect PCM connectors. Check Brown wire between AIR pump relay and PCM for short to ground. If problem was found, go to step 43. If problem was not found, go to step 46.
- Check for leaks or restrictions in the following components:
- Hoses
- Check valves
- Fittings
- AIR pipes
- Exhaust manifolds
If problem was found, go to step 44. If problem was not found, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Turn ignition on. Using test light connected to battery voltage, probe AIR pump relay connector terminal No. 85 (Pink wire). If test light is on, go to step 32. If test light is off, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Reconnect AIR pump. Using scan tool, command AIR pump on. If AIR maxifuse opens, go to step 37. If AIR maxifuse does not open, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Repair open in Pink wire or Red wire between fuse and AIR pump relay. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair short to ground in Pink wire or Red wire between fuse and AIR pump relay. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair open in Red wire between AIR pump relay and AIR pump or AIR solenoid. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair short to voltage in Red wire between AIR pump relay and AIR pump or AIR solenoid. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair short to ground in Red wire between AIR pump relay and AIR pump or AIR solenoid. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Replace AIR pump relay. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Replace AIR pump. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair leak or restriction in vacuum hose. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair open in Black wire between AIR pump and ground. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Replace AIR shut-off valve. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair open in Brown wire between AIR pump relay and PCM. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair short to voltage in Brown wire between AIR pump relay and PCM. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair short to ground in Brown wire between AIR pump relay and PCM. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Repair air delivery system as necessary. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Replace AIR pump solenoid. After repairs, go to step 48.
- Check PCM connectors for poor connections. If problem was found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 48. If problem was not found, go to next step.
- Replace PCM. Program PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to next step.
- Install scan tool. Start engine and allow it to run for 2 minutes. Ensure engine is running at normal operating temperature and is in closed loop. Using scan tool, command AIR pump on. If STFT indicates a change of more than 20 percent within 30 seconds, go to next step. If STFT does not indicate a change of more than 20 percent within 30 seconds, go to step 6.
- Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within code enable criteria. If DTC runs and passes, go to next step. If DTC does not run and pass, go to step 6.
- Using scan tool, observe stored information. If scan tool displays any DTCs that have not been diagnosed, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If scan tool does not display any DTCs, system is okay.
