Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING COOLING SYSTEM in ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM .
  3. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  4. Lower the vehicle.
  5. Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement - Lower .
  6. Remove the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  7. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to EXHAUST CROSSOVER PIPE REPLACEMENT (3.1L) in AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE SERVICING .
  8. Remove the right spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Refer to SPARK PLUG WIRE REPLACEMENT in ENGINE CONTROLS - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION, OVERHAUL .
  9. Remove the fuel line bracket bolt/stud and the bracket.

  10. Remove the generator. Refer to GENERATOR .
  11. Remove the right spark plugs. Refer to SPARK PLUGS .
  12. Remove the right exhaust manifold. Refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT - RIGHT (3.1L) in AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE SERVICING .
  13. Remove the right cylinder head bolts.
  14. Remove the right cylinder head.

  15. Remove the right cylinder head gasket.

  16. Clean the following areas:
    • The gasket mating surfaces on the cylinder head, cylinder block, and intake manifolds.
    • The cylinder block bolt threads.
    • The cylinder head bolts.
  17. Clean and inspect the cylinder head. Refer to CYLINDER HEAD CLEANING AND INSPECTION .
