Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Buick Century. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: The inertial weight section of the crankshaft balancer is assembled to the hub with a rubber type material. The correct installation procedures (with the proper tool) must be followed or movement of the inertial weight section of the hub will destroy the tuning of the crankshaft balancer.
  1. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  2. Raise support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the right front tire and wheel.
  4. Remove the right engine splash shield. Refer to SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT - ENGINE in BODY FRONT END .
  5. Install the jack stands to the frame.
  6. Loosen the left frame bolts and remove the right side frame bolts.
  7. Using the jack stands, lower the right side of the frame to access the crankshaft balancer.
  8. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to TORQUE CONVERTER COVER REPLACEMENT in AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE SERVICING .
  9. Install the J 37096 to the flywheel to prevent flywheel rotation.
  10. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt and the washer.
  11. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Use the J 24420-C.
