Transaxle Assembly: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Ensure the input shaft splines line up with the clutch disc splines before tightening the clutch housing bolts. DO NOT use the bolts to pull the transaxle up to the engine.
  1. Place the transaxle securely on a jack and position under the vehicle. Install Seal Protector (SA91112T) into both axle seals. Place the transaxle into any gear. Raise the transaxle into the vehicle in order to align the input shaft to the center of the clutch. Guide the transaxle into position and rotate back and forth to align the input shaft splines to the clutch disc.
    2. CAUTION: Ensure transaxle-to-engine bolts and engine-to-transaxle bolts are inserted from correct side of components. See Figure . Component damage or failure to secure components properly may result from incorrect bolt installation.
  2. Ensure that proper fastening locations are used. Install the transaxle-to-engine bolt from the transaxle side. Install the engine-to-transaxle bolts from the engine side. Tighten the bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Raise transaxle jack until transaxle lines up with the top of transaxle mount. Hand start top transaxle mount bolts. Tighten bolts to specification. Remove the transaxle jack.
  3. Install the left axle shaft into the transaxle. Remove the seal protector after the splines clear seal protector but before snapping the shaft into place. Use caution not to damage axle seal when intermediate shaft is installed into transaxle. In a similar manner, install the intermediate shaft into the transaxle.
  4. Install the front transaxle mount to the transaxle. Install the front transaxle mount bolts. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install the rear transaxle mount and bracket to the transaxle. Install the rear transaxle mount-to-transaxle bolts. Tighten bolts to specification.
  5. Raise the cradle and place the lower ball joints into the knuckles while installing. Ensure the lower control arm studs to the knuckle and the cooling module support bushings are correctly positioned when raising the frame into the vehicle.
  6. Tighten the cradle-to-body bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install the front air dam to body push pins. Install the front transaxle mount through bolt and tighten to specification. Install the rear transaxle mount through bolt. Tighten bolt to specification.
  7. Connect the steering gear to the steering column assembly. Install the steering gear-to-steering column bolt. Tighten the bolts to specification.
  8. Install the lower control arm ball stud to the knuckle. Install the lower control arm nut and a NEW cotter pin. Tighten the nut to specification. Important DO NOT allow the stud to rotate. Tighten the nut one additional flat in order to align the cotter pin hole, if necessary. Secure the cotter pin.
  9. Install NEW stabilizer bar link nuts to the lower stabilizer bar links. Tighten the nuts to specification. Using Steering Linkage Installer (J-44015), install tie rod end to steering knuckle. See Fig 1 . Tighten the tie rod end-to-steering knuckle nut to specification.
  10. Install backup lamp switch harness connector. Install front wheel speed sensor. Connect clutch hydraulic line to the actuator cylinder by inserting and pushing in the "C" clip until it stops. Connect the shift cables into the shift cable bracket. Connect the shift cable ends to the transaxle. Install the left inner splash shield.
  11. Install wheel/tire assemblies. Install the wheel lug nuts and tighten in a crisscross pattern to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Bleed the clutch system. See BLEEDING  .
  12. Check transaxle fluid level. Add fluid as necessary. See appropriate SERVICING - M/T article in MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery. Tighten battery terminal bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install battery cover and tighten screws to specification. Program the radio stations.
