Diagnostic Procedures

- Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS .
- Attempt to start the engine. Does the engine start and run? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 4.
- Observe the Freeze Frame/Failure Records for this DTC. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Did the DTC fail this ignition? If yes, go to next step. If no, problem is intermittent. Refer to INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - 2.2L & 3.0L VUE article.
- Turn ignition off. Raise the vehicle. Disconnect the CKP sensor. Measure the resistance from the high circuit to the low circuit of the CKP sensor with a DVOM. Is the resistance within 800-1200 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 10.
- Inspect the harness of the CKP sensor for incorrect routing that is too close to the secondary ignition wires or module, battery cables, any solenoids, any relays, any motors, or after-market add-on electrical equipment. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 14. If no, go to next step.
- Test the high circuit of the CKP sensor for an intermittent condition. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 14. If no, go to next step.
- Test the low circuit of the CKP sensor for an intermittent condition. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 14. If no, go to next step.
- Test for an intermittent and for a poor connection at the CKP sensor. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 14. If no, go to next step.
- Test for an intermittent and for a poor connection at the ECM. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 14. If no, go to step 13.
- Remove CKP sensor. Visually inspect the CKP sensor for physical damage, excessive play or looseness, improper installation, foreign material passing between CKP sensor and reluctor wheel, excessive air gap between CKP sensor and reluctor wheel, or electromagnetic interference in CKP sensor circuits. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 14. If no, go to next step.
- Inspect the CKP reluctor wheel for physical damage, excessive end play or looseness, or improper installation. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 14. If no, go to next step.
- Replace CKP sensor. After replacing sensor, go to step 14.
- Replace ECM. Perform ECM relearn procedures. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. After replacing ECM, go to next step.
- Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze/Frame Failure Records. Did the DTC fail this ignition? If yes, go to step 2. If no, go to next step.
- Observe the Capture Info with a scan tool. Are there any DTCs that have not been diagnosed? If yes, diagnose affected DTC(s). See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
