Diagnostic Procedures

- Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS .
- Attempt to start the engine. Does the engine start and run? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 4.
- Observe the Freeze Frame/Failure Records for this DTC. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Did the DTC fail this ignition? If yes, go to next step. If no, problem is intermittent. Refer to INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - 2.2L & 3.0L VUE article.
- Turn ignition off. Raise the vehicle. Disconnect the CKP sensor. Measure the resistance from the high circuit to the low circuit of the CKP sensor with a DVOM. Is resistance within 800-1200 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 19.
- Measure the voltage from the high circuit of the CKP sensor harness connector to a good ground with a DVOM. Is the voltage greater than 4 volts? If yes, go to step 12. If no, go to next step.
- Measure the voltage from the low circuit of the CKP sensor harness connector to a good ground with a DVOM. Is voltage greater than 4 volts? If yes, go to step 13. If no, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Measure the voltage from the high circuit of the CKP sensor harness connector to a good ground with a DVOM. Is voltage greater than 4 volts? If yes, go to step 12. If no, go to next step.
- Measure the voltage from the low circuit of the CKP sensor harness connector to a good ground with a DVOM. Is voltage greater than 4 volts? If yes, go to step 13. If no, go to next step.
- Measure the voltage from the high circuit of the CKP sensor harness connector to a good ground with a DVOM. Is voltage less than 2 volts? If yes, go to step 14. If no, go to next step.
- Measure the voltage from the low circuit of the CKP sensor harness connector to a good ground with a DVOM. Is voltage less than 2 volts? If yes, go to step 15. If no, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect the ECM. Measure the continuity between the high circuit and the low circuit of the CKP sensor at the controller side of the CKP sensor harness connector with a DVOM. Does the DVOM display OL? If yes, go to step 17. If no, go to step 16.
- Test the high circuit for a short to voltage. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to step 17.
- Test the low circuit for a short to voltage. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to step 17.
- Test the high circuit for an open or high resistance. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to step 17.
- Test the low circuit for an open or high resistance. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to step 17.
- Test the high circuit shorted to the low circuit. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to step 17.
- Test for an intermittent and for a poor connection at the CKP sensor. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to next step.
- Test for an intermittent and for a poor connection at the ECM. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to step 22.
- Remove CKP sensor. Inspect CKP sensor for physical damage, excessive play or looseness, improper installation, foreign material passing between CKP sensor and reluctor wheel, excessive air gap between CKP sensor and reluctor wheel, or electromagnetic interference in the CKP sensor circuits. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to next step.
- Inspect the reluctor wheel for physical damage, excessive end play or looseness, or improper installation. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to next step.
- Replace CKP sensor. After replacing sensor, go to step 23.
- Replace ECM. Perform ECM relearn procedures. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. After replacing ECM, go to next step.
- Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze/Frame Failure Records. Did the DTC fail this ignition? If yes, go to step 2. If no, go to next step.
- Observe the Capture Info with a scan tool. Are there any DTCs that have not been diagnosed? If yes, diagnose affected DTC(s). See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
