Diagnostic Procedures

- Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS .
- Observe the Freeze Frame/Failure Records for this DTC. Turn ignition off for 90 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Did the DTC fail this ignition? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If no, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect the affected KS. Set the DVOM to the ohms scale. Measure the resistance from the signal circuit on the sensor side of the KS connector to a good ground with the DVOM. Measure the resistance from the low reference circuit on the sensor side of the KS connector to a good ground with the DVOM. Does the DVOM display OL for both terminals? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 9.
- Connect the DVOM between the terminals of the affected KS. Set the DVOM to the 400 mV AC hertz scale and wait for the DVOM to stabilize at zero Hz. DO NOT tap on plastic engine components. Tap on engine block with a non-metallic object near the affected KS while observing the signal indicated on the DVOM. Does the DVOM display a fluctuating frequency while tapping on the engine block? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 9.
- Disconnect the ECM. Test the KS signal circuit between the ECM and KS for an open, high resistance, short to ground, or short to KS low reference circuit. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 11. If no, go to next step.
- Test the KS low reference circuit between the ECM and the KS for an open, high resistance or short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 11. If no, go to next step.
- Test for an intermittent and for a poor connection at the KS connector. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 11. If no, go to next step.
- Test for an intermittent and for a poor connection at the ECM. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 11. If no, go to step 10.
- Replace KS. After replacing sensor, go to step 11.
- Replace ECM. Perform ECM relearn procedures. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. After replacing ECM, go to next step.
- Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Turn ignition off for 90 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Did the DTC fail this ignition? If yes, go to step 2. If no, go to next step.
- Observe the Capture Info with a scan tool. Are there any DTCs that have not been diagnosed? If yes, diagnose affected DTC(s). See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
