Transaxle (4T65-E): Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Oldsmobile Aurora and 2002 Oldsmobile Aurora. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Lock the steering column by installing Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin (J 42640) into the underside of the steering column. See Fig 1.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4. Using a large flat-bladed tool, remove the range selector cable from the range selector lever.
  5. Remove the range selector cable with bracket from the transaxle case and set aside. See Fig 2.
  6. Remove nut (5) and bolt (2) from the AIR pipe. See Fig 3.

  7. Remove bolt (3) from the AIR pipe (2). See Fig 4.
  8. Remove the ground cable bolt (1) from the transaxle. See Fig 4.
  9. Disconnect the transaxle electrical connector C100 (2). See Fig 5.
  10. Remove the wiring harness (3) from the wiring harness retainer (1) on the transaxle.
  11. Install the engine support fixture.

  12. Remove the upper engine-to-transaxle case bolts (2-5). See Fig 6.
  13. Raise and support the vehicle.
  14. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly.
  15. Remove both of the left fascia extensions. See Fig 7.
  16. Remove the front air deflector.

    WARNING: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear or to the intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control, which could result in an accident and possible personal injury.
  17. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt. See Fig 8.
  18. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
  19. Remove the power steering gear heat shield. See appropriate POWER RACK & PINION article in STEERING.
  20. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts. See Fig 9.
  21. Remove the power steering line retainers from the frame.
  22. Secure the power steering gear to the exhaust manifold.

  23. Loosen the two mounting nuts (2) in order to allow removal of the brake pressure modulator valve (1) from the bracket (3). See Fig 10.
  24. Remove the brake line retainers from the frame.
  25. Remove the left transaxle mount (2). See Fig 11.
  26. Remove the frame. See FRAME REPLACEMENT .
    CAUTION: Carefully guide the axle shaft past the lip seal. The splined portion of the axle can cut the seal.
  27. Remove the right and left drive axles from the transaxle. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  28. Disconnect the transaxle oil cooler hoses from the transaxle. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article.
  29. Remove the transaxle fluid filler tube. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article.
  30. Remove the torque converter cover.

  31. Mark the flywheel to converter relationship to ensure proper reassembly. Remove the flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. See Fig 12.
  32. Support transaxle using an appropriate transaxle jack.
  33. Disconnect vehicle speed sensor electrical connector.

  34. Remove the transaxle brace-to-transaxle and transaxle brace-to-engine bolts.
  35. Remove the transaxle brace. See Fig 13.
  36. Remove the engine-to-transaxle case bolt (6) which is accessible through right wheel opening. See Fig 6.
  37. Remove the remaining transaxle-to-engine bolt (1). See Fig 6.
  38. Remove the transaxle from vehicle using an appropriate transaxle jack.
  39. Remove the rear transaxle bracket (1) from the transaxle. See Fig 14.
  40. Remove the left transaxle bracket (1) from the transaxle. See Fig 15.
