Transaxle (4T65-E): Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Oldsmobile Aurora and 2002 Oldsmobile Aurora. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the left transaxle bracket (1) to the transaxle. See Figure.
  2. Install the left transaxle bracket bolts. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  3. Install the rear transaxle bracket (1) to the transaxle. See Figure.
  4. Install the rear transaxle bracket bolts. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  5. Install the transaxle into the vehicle and align the engine alignment dowels (1 and 5). See Figure.
  6. Install the transaxle case-to-engine bolts (1 and 6). See Figure. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  7. Install the transaxle brace.
  8. Install the transaxle brace-to-engine bolts. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  9. Install the transaxle brace-to-transaxle bolts. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  10. Connect vehicle speed sensor electrical connector.
  11. Remove the transaxle jack.
    WARNING: Align the marks made on the torque converter and flywheel during disassembly, unless installing a new converter. Tighten all the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts twice.
  12. Install the flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. See Figure.
  13. Install the torque converter cover.
  14. Install the transaxle fluid filler tube. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article.
  15. Connect the transaxle oil cooler hoses to the transaxle. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article.
  16. Install the left and the right drive axles into the transaxle. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  17. Install the frame. See FRAME REPLACEMENT .
  18. Install the left transaxle mount (2). See Figure.
  19. Position the brake pressure modulator valve (1) into the bracket (3). See Figure. Tighten the two nuts (2) to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  20. Install the brake line retainers onto the frame.
  21. Install the power steering gear mounting bolts. See Figure. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  22. Install the power steering line retainers onto the frame.
  23. Install the power steering gear heat shield. See appropriate POWER RACK & PINION article in STEERING.
    CAUTION: When installing the intermediate shaft, make sure that the shaft is seated prior to pinch bolt installation. If the pinch bolt is inserted into the coupling before shaft installation, the two mating shafts may disengage. Disengagement of the two mating shafts will cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.
  24. Connect the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
  25. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt. See Figure.
  26. Install both of the left fascia extensions. See Figure.
  27. Install the front air deflector.
  28. Install the front tire and wheel assembly.
  29. Lower the vehicle.
  30. Install the upper transaxle case-to-engine bolts (2-5). See Figure. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  31. Remove the engine support fixture.
  32. Install the range selector cable bracket and cable. Tighten the range selector cable bracket nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  33. Install the range selector cable onto the range selector lever. See Figure.
  34. Check adjustment of the range selector cable. Adjust as needed. See ADJUSTMENTS in appropriate SERVICING article.
  35. Connect the transaxle electrical connector C100 (2). See Figure.
  36. Install the wiring harness (3) into the wiring harness retainer (1) on the transaxle.
  37. Install ground cable and bolt (1) to transaxle. See Figure. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  38. Install bolt (3) to AIR pipe (2). See Figure. Tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  39. Install nut (5) and bolt (2) to AIR pipe. See Figure. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  40. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  41. Connect the negative battery cable.
  42. Remove the Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin (J 42640) from the steering column. See Figure.
  43. Flush the transaxle oil cooler. See LUBRICATION in appropriate SERVICING article.
  44. Fill the transaxle with appropriate fluid to proper level. See LUBRICATION in appropriate SERVICING article.
  45. Inspect the transaxle fluid level.
  46. Inspect for fluid leaks.
  47. Clear TAPS (Transaxle Adaptive Pressures).
  48. Check the front end alignment. See appropriate SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT.
  49. Road test the vehicle and check for transaxle leaks.
