Disabling System (Cavalier & Sunfire)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 110 other vehicles, including the 2003 Pontiac Vibe, 2003 Pontiac Sunfire, 2003 Pontiac Montana, 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix, and 2003 Pontiac Grand Am. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS . Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position. Turn ignition switch to LOCK or OFF position and remove key. Remove AIR BAG fuse from fuse block. Fuse block is located behind cover on far left end of instrument panel. Wait at least one minute.

  2. Zones 2 Or 6 (Coupe)

    To disable Side Impact Sensor (SIS) located in SIR Zone 2 (left) or 6 (right), remove door trim panel of suspect sensor. Remove enough water deflector to access the side air bag sensor. Remove side air bag sensor from door. See Fig 1. Remove Connector Position Assurance (CPA) clip from SIS connector and disconnect SIS connector.

  3. Zones 2 Or 6 (Sedan)

    To disable Side Impact Sensor (SIS) located in SIR Zones 2 (left) or 6 (right), remove center pillar upper trim. Remove inflatable restraint side air bag sensor from center pillar. See Fig 2. Remove CPA clip from SIS connector and disconnect SIS connector.

  4. Zone 3

    To disable driver air bag module and coil located in SIR Zone 3, remove CPA clip from driver air bag module in-line Yellow 2-pin connector. Connector is located under the instrument panel, left of the steering column. See Fig 3. Disconnect driver air bag module Yellow 2-pin connector.

  5. Zone 5

    To disable passenger air bag module located in SIR Zone 5, remove CPA clip from the passenger air bag module in-line Yellow 2-pin connector located under the instrument panel, left of the steering column. See Fig 3. Disconnect the inflatable restraint instrument panel module in-line connector.

  6. Zone 7 Or 9

    To disable driver seat with left side air bag module located in SIR Zone 7 or passenger seat with right side air bag module located in SIR Zone 9, remove CPA clip from inflatable restraint side air bag module connector located under seat. See Fig 4. Disconnect side air bag module connector.

  7. Zone 9

    To disable Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) located in SIR Zone 9, disable Zones 3, 5, 7 and 9. Disconnect Yellow component connectors.
