Diagnostic Procedures

- Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 3.0L VUE article.
- Does the scan tool display any "U" type DTCs? If yes, diagnose affected DTC(s). See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If no, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Observe the DTC information with a scan tool. Does the scan tool display DTCs P0102, P0108, P0201-P0206, P0230, P0231, P0232, P0341, P0342, P0343, P0335, P0338, P0601, P0602, P0603, P0604, P0606, P0610, P0627, P0628, P0629, P1629, P1630, P1631, or P1682? If yes, diagnose affected DTC(s). See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 3.0L VUE article. If no, go to next step.
- Does the scan tool display any Body Control Module (BCM) or Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) DTCs? If yes, diagnose affected DTC(s). See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If no, go to next step.
- Command the fuel pump ON with a scan tool. Does the fuel pump operate? If yes, go to next step. If no, see FUEL PUMP ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT DIAGNOSIS (3.0L) under FUEL SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - 2.2L & 3.0L VUE article.
- Disconnect the harness connector of both ignition module assemblies. The fuel injector test light will be dim, which is normal. If using a different fuel injector test light, the bulb resistance must be 4 ohms or less. Using jumper wires, connect the Fuel Injector Test Light (J-34730-2C) between the ignition voltage circuit and the Ignition Control (IC) 1 circuit of the ignition module harness connector. Command the ignition coil cylinder No. 1 ON with a scan tool. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the remaining IC circuits. Does the fuel injector test light flash for all IC circuits? If yes, go to next step. If no, diagnose electronic ignition system. See ELECTRONIC IGNITION SYSTEM (3.0L) .
- Turn ignition off. Install Fuel Pressure Gauge (SA9127E). Turn ignition on, with engine off. Command the fuel pump ON with a scan tool. Is fuel pressure 50-60 psi (345-413 kPa) while fuel pump is operating? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to FUEL SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS .
- Inspect for a collapsed air intake duct, a restricted air filter element, or spark plugs for being gas or coolant fouled. If spark plugs are fouled, determine what caused the condition. Check for any engine mechanical conditions, worn timing chain and gears, or low compression. Check for a restricted exhaust system. Check for an Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor that has shifted in value, or a contaminated fuel. Did you complete the action? Go to next step.
- Clear DTCs with a scan tool. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds. Attempt to start engine. Does the engine start, then continue to run? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 2 .
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature. Observe the DTC information with a scan tool. Are there any DTCs that have not been diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 3.0L VUE article. If no, system is okay.
