Case Extension Housing: Removal

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and support the vehicle. Disconnect the right drive axle from the transaxle. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  2. Remove transaxle brace. See TRANSAXLE BRACE  . Remove the vehicle speed sensor. See VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR  .
  3. Remove the case extension housing bolts. See Fig 1 . Remove the case extension housing with axle seal and the O-ring. Inspect the case extension for the following conditions:
    • Damaged or porous sealing surface for the case extension seal.
    • Damaged or porous sealing surface for the vehicle speed sensor.
    • Damaged or porous sealing surface for the right drive axle oil seal.
    • Damaged or porous sealing surface for the case extension housing.
    • Damaged or worn differential carrier bushing or output shaft bearing.
    • Damaged bolt holes.
    • Inspect the drive axle seal and replace if necessary.
