Test V: Malfunction Indicator Light/Service Engine Soon Indicator Inoperative

  1. If powertrain control diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform POWERTRAIN CONTROL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If powertrain control diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step.
  2. Inspect IGN 1 fuse (10-amp) in Instrument Panel (IP) fuse block. See Figure . IP fuse block is located behind right side instrument panel endcap. If IGN 1 fuse is not blown, go to next step. If IGN 1 fuse is blown, go to step  10 .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Clear harness connector C2. PCM is located in air filter housing. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between ground and PCM harness connector C2 terminal 5 (Brown/White wire). See Figure . Observe SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator. If SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator illuminates, go to step  9 .
  4. If fuse in jumper wire did not blow, go to next step. If fuse in jumper wire blew, go to step  11 .
  5. Test Brown/White wire between IPC harness connector C2 terminal "G" and PCM Clear harness connector C2 terminal No. 5 for an open. See Figure and Figure . If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  14 .
  6. Connect a test light between ground and IPC harness connector C2 terminal "J" (Pink wire). If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step  8 .
  7. Repair open in Pink wire between IPC harness connector C2 terminal "J". See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to step  14 .
  8. Check for poor connections at IPC harness connector C2. If no problem is found, go to step  12 . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  14 .
  9. Check for poor connections at PCM harness connector C2. If no problem is found, go to step  13 . If problem is found, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  14 .
  10. Repair short to ground in Pink wire between IPC harness connector C2 terminal "J". See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to step  14 .
  11. Repair short to voltage in Brown/White wire between IPC harness connector C2 terminal "G" and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 5. See Figure and Figure . After repair, go to step  14 .
  12. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step  14 .
  13. Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  14. Operate system to verify repair. If system does not operate properly, go to step  2 . If system operates properly, system is okay.
