Test U: Malfunction Indicator Light/Service Engine Soon Indicator Always On

  1. If powertrain control diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform POWERTRAIN CONTROL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If powertrain control diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position, with engine off. Using scan tool, retrieve Powertrain Control Module (PCM) DTCs. If scan tool does not display PCM DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool displays PCM DTCs, perform appropriate test. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Observe SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator in Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). If SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator illuminates, go to step  6 .
  4. Using scan tool, command SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator on and off several times. If SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator does not respond as commanded, go to next step. If SERVICE ENGINE SOON responds as commanded, check for an intermittent or poor connections in related circuits. See DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS  .
  5. Repair Brown/White wire between IPC harness connector C2 terminal "G" and PCM Clear harness connector C2 terminal No. 5 for short to ground. See Figure and Figure . PCM is located inside air cleaner housing. After repair, go to step  7 .
  6. Repair Brown/White wire between IPC harness connector C2 terminal "G" and PCM Clear harness connector C2 terminal No. 3 for short to voltage. See Figure and Figure . PCM is located inside air cleaner housing. After repair, go to next step.
  7. Using scan tool, command SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator on and off several times. If SERVICE ENGINE SOON indicator does not respond as commanded, go to step  2 . If SERVICE ENGINE SOON responds as commanded, perform POWERTRAIN CONTROL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  .
