Test M: Charge Warning Indicator Always On

  1. Ensure battery and charging system are okay. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. After ensuring battery and charging system are okay, go to next step.
  2. Observe charge indicator. Start engine. If charge indicator remains illuminated, go to next step. If charge indicator does not remain illuminated, check for an intermittent or poor connections in related circuits. See DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS  .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Using scan tool, observe IGN 1 SIGNAL parameter in PCM data list. If scan tool displays 10-15 volts, go to next step. If scan tool does not display 10-15 volts, diagnose charging system problem. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  4. Replace Powertrain Control Module (PCM). See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  5. Operate system to verify repair. If system does not operate properly, go to step  2 . If system operates properly, system is okay.
