DTC P0461: Fuel Sending Unit Performance (2.5L): Testing

  1. Perform diagnostic system check. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect in-line 12-pin harness connector C401. In-line harness connector C401 is located in frame rail below left taillight assembly. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and in-line harness connector C401 terminal No. 4 (Blue/White wire). See Figure . If voltage is 7-8 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 7-8 volts, go to step  8 .
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect PCM 35-pin harness connector C1. PCM is located under right side of instrument panel, below blower motor. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 12 (Blue/White wire). See Figure . If voltage is 7-8 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 7-8 volts, go to step  9 .
  4. Reconnect in-line harness connector C401. Remove fuel tank. Disconnect fuel sending unit 4-pin harness connector. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and fuel sending unit harness connector terminal No. 2 (Blue/White wire). See Figure . If voltage is 7-8 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 7-8 volts, go to step  9 .
  5. Measure resistance in Black/Yellow wire between ground and fuel sending unit harness connector terminal No. 4. See Figure . If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 2 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between fuel sending unit and ground. Ground is located on right side of intake manifold. After repairs, go to step  14 .
  6. NOTE: To ensure proper fuel level reading is obtained on scan tool, clear any other fuel level DTCs before proceeding.
  7. Remove fuel sending unit from fuel tank. Reconnect fuel sending unit to harness connector. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. While observing fuel sending unit parameter on scan tool, move fuel sending unit float from empty position to full position. Repeat procedure several times. If fuel tank level value does not change smoothly as float is swept from empty to full, go to next step. If fuel tank level value changes smoothly as float is swept from empty to full, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  8. NOTE: Fuel gauge responds slowly to changes in fuel sending unit position.
  9. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Move fuel sending unit float while observing fuel gauge on instrument cluster. If fuel tank level value changes smoothly as float is swept from empty to full, go to step  12 . If fuel gauge value does not change smoothly as float is swept from empty to full, go to step  10 .
  10. Check continuity in Blue/White wire between in-line harness connector terminal No. 4 and PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 12. See Figure and Figure . If continuity exists, go to step  11 . If continuity does not exist, repair open in Blue/White wire between PCM and fuel sending unit. After repairs, go to step  14 .
  11. Repair open or short in Blue/White wire between in-line harness connector C401 and fuel sending unit. After repairs, go to step  14 .
  12. Replace fuel sending unit. After replacing fuel sending unit, go to step  14 .
  13. Check continuity in Blue/White wire between PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 12 and instrument cluster harness connector C3 terminal No. 3. See Figure and Figure . If continuity exists, go to step  13 . If continuity does not exist, repair open in Blue/White wire between PCM and instrument cluster. After repairs, go to step  14 .
  14. Check continuity in Blue/White wire between PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 12 and instrument cluster harness connector C3 terminal No. 3. See Figure and Figure . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Blue/White wire between PCM and instrument cluster. After repairs, go to step  14 .
  15. Replace PCM. Perform PCM relearn procedures. See PROGRAMMING in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
  16. After repairs, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within FREEZE FRAME conditions that set DTC. Check for DTCs. If no DTCs are stored, repair is complete. If any DTCs are stored, diagnose DTC(s).
