Removal & Installation: Camshafts: Installation

  1. Align crankshaft keyway with timing mark on engine block. Apply engine oil to camshaft journals and lobes. Install camshafts into cylinder head, aligning guide pins with notches on cylinder head. See Figure. Position slot in exhaust camshaft to accept camshaft position sensor. Install cylinder head dowel pins. See Fig 1.
    NOTE: Ensure camshaft bearing caps are installed in their original positions. Bearing caps are marked with "E" (exhaust), or "I" (intake). Number stamped on bearing cap indicates position from timing chain, and arrow shows direction toward timing chain. See Fig 2.
  2. Install camshaft bearing caps in original positions. Tighten camshaft bearing cap bolts in sequence and to specification. See Figure. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. On 4WD models, adjust front wheel toe-in. See appropriate SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT.
