DTC C1221-C1228: Wheel Speed Sensor Malfunction: Diagnosis

  1. Perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  . Go to next step.
  2. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition on. Drive vehicle at a speed greater than 5 MPH. Use scan tool to monitor all 4 Wheel Speed Sensors (WSS) in ABS DATA LIST. Scan tool should show all 4 WSS at same speed. If scan tool indicates suspect WSS is okay, go to step  7 . If scan tool indicates suspect WSS is not okay, go to next step.
  3. Inspect WSS, harness and connector for damage or debris. Perform wiggle test on related harness and connectors. If damage is found, repair as necessary, then recheck system. If damage is not found, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect WSS connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between WSS terminals. DVOM should display 1000-2000 ohms. If resistance is not as specified, replace WSS. See WHEEL SPEED SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is as specified, go to next step.
  5. Raise and support vehicle. Using DVOM, measure AC voltage between terminals, while spinning wheel. AC voltage should be more than 100mV. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, replace WSS. See WHEEL SPEED SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  6. Check for short between high and low signal wires of appropriate WSS. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If short is present, repair as necessary. If short is not present, replace EBCM. See BRAKE PRESSURE MODULATOR VALVE & ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  7. Use scan tool to clear DTCs. Spray suspected WSS with saltwater solution. Drive vehicle over various road surfaces at speeds greater than 25 MPH for at least 30 seconds. If DTC does not reset, system is okay. If DTC resets, replace suspected WSS or repair WSS wiring. Thoroughly rinse saltwater from vehicle when completed, and recheck system.
