Test G: Speedometer &/Or Odometer Inaccurate Or Inoperative
- Review description and operation prior to performing test. See DESCRIPTION & OPERATION .
- Verify speedometer and/or odometer is inoperative or inaccurate. If speedometer and/or odometer does not operate normally, go to next step. If speedometer and/or odometer operates normally, diagnose intermittent condition. See INTERMITTENTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES - PRIZM article.
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument cluster panel, right of steering column. Using scan tool, check for DTC P0500. If scan tool does not display DTC P0500, go to next step. If scan tool displays DTC P0500, diagnose DTC P0500. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- If speedometer registers any position change, go to next step. If speedometer does not register any position change, go to step 12 .
- Raise and support vehicle. Turn ignition switch to START position and let engine idle. Accelerate vehicle to 20 MPH. Measure frequency of Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) by backprobing VSS harness connector terminal No. 3 (White/Blue wire). VSS frequency should be 17-23 Hz. If frequency is as specified, go to next step. If frequency is not as specified, go to step 7 .
- Disconnect instrument cluster 13-pin harness connector C2. Disconnect VSS 3-pin harness connector. Measure resistance in White/Blue wire between VSS harness connector terminal No. 3 and instrument cluster harness connector C2 terminal No. 10. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to step 8 . If resistance is 2 ohms or more, go to step 9 .
- Stop wheels and place gear shifter in Park. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Replace VSS. After repair, go to step 23 .
- Inspect instrument cluster printed circuit for damage or corrosion. If instrument cluster printed circuit is okay, go to step 10 . If instrument cluster printed circuit is not okay, go to step 11 .
- Repair open in White/Blue wire between instrument cluster and VSS. After repair, go to step 23 .
- Replace speedometer/odometer. After repair, go to step 23 .
- Replace instrument cluster printed circuit. After repair, go to step 23 .
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Disconnect Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) 3-pin harness connector. Measure voltage between ground and VSS harness connector terminal No. 1 (Red/Blue wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 14 .
- Measure resistance between ground and VSS harness connector terminal No. 2 (Red/White wire). If resistance is 2 ohms or more, go to step 16 . If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to step 21 .
- Repair open in Red/Blue wire between VSS and junction block No. 3. After repair, go to step 23 .
- Replace VSS. After repair, go to step 23 .
- If no other gauges are inaccurate, go to next step. If other gauges are inaccurate, go to step 18 .
- Measure resistance in Red/White wire between instrument cluster harness connector C2 terminal No. 4 and VSS harness connector terminal No. 2. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to step 8 . If resistance is 2 ohms or more, go to step 20 .
- Measure resistance in between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C3 terminal No. 15 (Brown wire). If resistance is 2 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to step 8 .
- Repair open in Brown wire between instrument cluster and ground. Ground point is located behind center of instrument panel, mounted to right side support. After repair, go to step 23 .
- Repair open in Red/White wire between VSS and instrument cluster. After repair, go to step 23 .
- Measure resistance in White/Blue wire between VSS harness connector terminal No. 3 and instrument cluster harness connector C2 terminal No. 10. If resistance is 2 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to step 15 .
- Repair open in White/Blue wire between VSS and instrument cluster. After repair, go to next step.
- Operate system to verify repair. If problem does not exist, system is okay. If problem still exists, go to step 3 .
